However I never took the time to learn the elements of writing, especially after losing the writing competition. In fact, I hated the elements of writing. It included too many rules, such as style, diction, grammar, point of view, etc. Looking back, it amazes me that I did well on writing assignments back in high school.

Everyone has same tests, everyone has a similar curriculum, and everyone has the same activities. If a student is competitive in the college application process, they usually participate in clubs, take AP classes, or play sports. I have done numerous clubs, extracurricular activities, abroad experiences, and honor societies; taken plenty of AP classes, earned awards. My decision was based on my high school experience. I always challenged myself to take rigorous and challenging courses.
When entering this English course, I did not know what to expect. I knew the course was going to be a lot of writing and work, but I would be able to get through it. A nervousness did fall over me while I started my first writing assignment. I knew I had a lot of improvement to do when it came to writing essays. I soon realized that college essays were nowhere near what someone would find in a high school setting.
