In the book, Odysseus does nothing out of the goodness of his heart. Odysseus was given advice from Circe that said not to try to fight Scylla even when she takes six of your men, but Odysseus tried to fight her and he lost three more men than the six he already lost. He also neglected to take the advice from his crew member, Eurylochus. Because of this ignorant action, he lost three more men on top of the other six. Odysseus also lacks the part of the hero profile which includes having a good heart.

The definition of a hero is someone who is respected for doing something great, and is respected for doing so. An average hero, also has flaws to accompany his heroic acts. Archetypal heroes are people who do noble or heroic things, accomplish his or her goals, or are looked up to by others. Archetypal heroes also have a crucial flaw, which serves as an imperfection that can often affect the hero themselves or others around them. Odysseus, the protagonist in the epic, is a good example of an archetypal hero. Odysseus does so by accomplishing his goals and overcoming obstacles, but has flaws that can get him involved in new conflicts. Odysseus shows the traits of a hero by accomplishing his goals, and overcoming any obstacles he happens to face.

He shows this true honor in the first six books because not only is he a fierce warrior, he uses this honor to positively affect others. He is the mightiest of the Trojan fighters, so he is full of the traditional Greek honor, but he upholds true honor by his loyalty to his brother, Paris, even when he makes mistakes in running the Trojan army. Hektor convinces Paris to fight in the war alongside his army by using his war given honor, but never abuses this power because he is kind and loving to his brother despite his errors. He also shows his true honor by never giving up on the war no matter the circumstances, unlike Achilles did when Agamemnon took his woman.
Beowulf is a despicable leader that is able to lead his men to victory like the time they hunted and took down Grendel. Beowulf also displays great courage, for example, when he fought the dragon, he knew it was his last battle, but there was no hint of fear on his face and he fought like a warrior until the bitter end. A hero that is willing to fight for what they believe in and lead people into the correct path.
