Any of the metallic elements belonging to Group 1 of the periodic table: lithium Li , sodium Na , potassium K , rubidium Rb , cesium Cs , and francium Fr. They are any of the elements found in Group IA of the periodic table. They are very reactive, electropositive, monovalent metals forming strongly alkaline hydroxides. All elements in the alkali metal group occur in nature. These metals are called alkali metals because they form alkalies i.

All of the alkali metals are found in group IA 1 of the periodic table of the elements. Because chemical properties are determined by the outer electron configuration of elements, it is important to note that the valence outer shell of all alkali metals contains a lone s 1 electron. Lithium has a 2s 1 outermost electron. Sodium has a 3s 1 outermost electron. Potassium has a 4s 1 outermost electron.
