Candidates must be enrolled in doctoral studies at a University in Jordan or enrol at the beginning of the scholarship and will devote their research to a local or regional aspect of the research programme. They will actively participate in the collective activities of the scientific network internal meetings, colloquia, seminars, publications. Particular attention will be paid to applications showing a good knowledge of the local and international bibliography on the subject, related to an original field of research and articulating in an innovative way problematized questions and reflections contributing to collective research. The general aim of the programme is to reinterpret local deliberative practices in the Arab world which can constitute the historical matrices of a vision of democracy, and to examine their transformation during the various phases of Ottoman, colonial, national and contemporary history. Attention will also be devoted to studying the impact of local deliberative practices on the global ideologies that have transformed, reinterpreted or challenged them. Excellent language skills in Arabic and English are required.

The Palestine conflict and the Iraq war have also contributed to advancing the politicization of religious-sectarian and ethnic differences as well as the rise of a violent Sunni Islamism in the Middle East.

The general aim of the project is to understand how these artists positioned themselves in their new surroundings and towards the situation in Egypt, particularly concerning their art production. The focus of the project is socio-anthropological. The inquiry will include the collection of relevant materials, participant observation, interviews and possibly archive work.
